Health & Safety

Learners will develop a thorough understanding of health, safety and hygiene requirements applicable to professional barbering services. Training covers safe working practices, infection prevention, sanitation and sterilisation procedures, safe handling and maintenance of barbering tools and equipment, risk assessment, client protection, personal protective equipment, and maintaining a clean, safe and professional working environment. Learners will also understand the importance of complying with current legislation, salon policies and industry best practice throughout every stage of client service.

Consultation & Client Care

Learners will develop professional consultation skills to accurately identify client requirements and recommend suitable barbering services. Training includes conducting thorough consultations, analysing hair and scalp conditions, recognising factors that may influence treatments, discussing desired outcomes, identifying contraindications where appropriate, recommending suitable products and aftercare, and maintaining effective communication before, during and after every barbering service to ensure high standards of client satisfaction.

Hair Cutting Techniques

Training focuses on developing the core barbering skills required to produce professional men’s haircuts using recognised industry techniques. Learners will develop competence in sectioning, guideline creation, club cutting, scissor-over-comb, clipper-over-comb, thinning techniques, freehand cutting and creating a variety of neckline finishes. Emphasis is placed on achieving balanced shapes, clean graduation, accurate blending, precision cutting and adapting techniques to suit different hair types, growth patterns and client requirements.

Beard Grooming & Shaping

Learners will develop the practical skills required to maintain and shape beards and moustaches using professional barbering techniques. Training includes facial hair consultation, selecting appropriate tools, using scissors, clippers with and without attachments, clipper-over-comb and freehand techniques to maintain existing beard shapes while achieving balanced proportions, clean outlines and professional finishing results that complement individual facial characteristics.

Hair Finishing & Styling

Learners will develop the ability to dry, style and finish men’s hair using a range of professional techniques and styling products. Training covers blow-drying methods, creating texture, movement and volume, selecting appropriate finishing products, achieving a variety of contemporary barbering finishes and evaluating completed services to ensure they meet both professional standards and client expectations.

Professional Practice

Throughout the qualification, learners will develop the professional behaviours expected within the barbering industry. This includes maintaining excellent personal presentation, working effectively within a salon team, managing time efficiently, communicating professionally with clients and colleagues, improving personal performance, maintaining client records, promoting retail products appropriately and delivering consistently high standards of customer service while working safely and ethically.

This qualification consists of 7 mandatory units Plus optional units. Learners must successfully complete all mandatory units and achieve a minimum of 9 credits from the optional units to achieve the full qualification.

Qualification Awarded

Upon successful completion of all required practical assessments, portfolio evidence and external assessment requirements, learners will receive the VTCT Skills Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering.
